Health Checks
Health checks are carried out in Primary 1 and 7. This may include vision, hearing, height and weight recording. Thereafter, periodic checks may be carried out if required. If a medical examination is necessary parents will be invited to attend.
Support for individual children
Advice is given for children with health problems. With parental liaison referral may be made to other medical, paramedical, educational or other specialists. Children who may have special needs are an important part of this process and may be seen more frequently.
Health Promotion and Education
Advice and support for pupils, parents, teachers; a drop-in health clinic for children in secondary school; work on health projects such as “No Smoking Day”; education may be offered on a range of topics, working with teachers, e.g. first aid, diet, exercise, hygiene, dental care, emotional and physical changes during puberty, relationships, parenting, sex education, HIV/AIDS, drugs, linking in with personal and social education programme as appropriate to age.
Immunisations
In Secondary school –
A diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster may be offered around S3 stage.
The HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccination) will be offered to S2 year girls. This vaccination was introduced in September 2008 to protect girls against two viruses that can cause cervical cancer in over 70% of people.
Prior to immunisation an explanatory letter is sent to parents and consent sought. For further information on immunisation contact www.immunisation.nhs.uk.
The BCG immunisation has been suspended and will only be offered to high risk infants. If you are concerned that your child is at risk of TB please contact us.
Consent
Parents will be asked to sign a consent form allowing children to take part in the above programme. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss this further please contact your school doctor or nurse.

Dental Inspections
Routine dental inspections are carried out throughout the year. The Community Dentist

Parents should bring prescribed medication to school and complete a permission form to enable the designated member of staff to administer this.
NO unprescribed medication can be given at school.
Medication should be collected by a parent/carer at the end of the school day.
Pupils who use inhalers may keep these in their school bags or in the Primary School office, as before
